From New York to Ukraine: A Blueberry Tale

Jim Sliz, a man deeply rooted in faith and science, began his journey with blueberries over 35 years ago in Northern New York. Having grown up in Michigan, a state known for its blueberries, Jim was no stranger to these delightful berries. He embarked on a journey to perfect his blueberry cultivation, experimenting with different varieties and consulting extensively with experts from Cornell University to understand the ideal soil composition.

His dedication led him to establish a thriving bed of 90 blueberry plants, which continues to benefit his family in New York with its bountiful harvest. Jim's method involved enhancing the naturally basic limestone soil with horse manure, decomposing wood chips, and sulfur to achieve the acidic conditions beloved by blueberry plants. His approach was a testament to his ability to blend his scientific knowledge with his agricultural passion.

Bringing the Blueberry Farming Experience to Ukraine

Jim’s connection with blueberries didn't just stay in New York. Recognizing the potential for similar success in Ukraine, he brought soil samples from Ukraine back to Cornell for testing to tailor the soil amendments needed for optimal growth in a new environment. His commitment extended to transporting hundreds of blueberry plants to Ukraine in his suitcase, carefully prepared to survive the 25-hour journey, demonstrating his dedication to sharing this piece of his heritage.

Living in Faith and Fulfilling God’s Plan

Jim’s story is not just about agricultural success; it’s about living a life guided by faith. His daughter Sarah reflects on her parents’ life in Ukraine, acknowledging how their actions are deeply embedded in their faith. "People ask me how I can be at peace with my parents so far away and in Ukraine at war…I confidently can answer because they are in God’s will! I have been richly blessed by my parents' example of living for God."

Moreover, a surprising twist in Jim’s story was revealed through ancestry testing, showing he is 99% Eastern European. This discovery has only deepened his commitment, feeling a profound connection to the land and the people of Ukraine, seeing it as a divine alignment to serve where his ancestors once walked.
