At Family of Christ International, we are blessed with dedicated volunteers whose selfless service and unwavering faith make a profound impact on the lives of those in need. Today, we highlight the incredible journey of Jim Sliz, a devoted volunteer whose life story is a testament to answering God's call and serving others with compassion and dedication.

A Life of Faith and Service

Jim holds a Masters in Chemical Engineering and a Masters in Divinity. Initially planning to work for GMI in Chemical Engineering, Jim felt a stronger calling from God to pursue ministry, despite the personal cost. His father, a non-believer, couldn't understand this decision. In 1976, Jim married Laurie, and together, they have celebrated 48 years of marriage. Jim earned his Masters in Divinity and became the pastor of a small Baptist church in Northern New York, close to his grandmother. However, the church board dismissed him a few years later due to his challenging biblical teachings.

Despite the challenges, Jim felt a strong need to remain near family and provide stability for his children. To supplement his income, he drove a school bus for over 30 years, all while raising five children who are now faithfully serving the Lord.

A Call to Serve Ukraine

In 1993, a presentation about Ukraine at their church ignited a calling in both Jim and Laurie to serve in Ukraine. Laurie expressed, "I believe we will live there." They immediately began going on short-term mission trips to Northern Ukraine during school breaks, collecting and delivering seeds, shoes, clothes, and medicine. This became an annual commitment.

To raise funds, Jim started hosting chicken BBQs every Saturday from April to September, a family endeavor that involved collecting pallets to burn and preparing for the events. Over the summers, he cooked over 2,000 chicken halves, with proceeds supporting their missions in Ukraine.

Full-Time Missionaries in Ukraine

In 2011, Jim retired from bus driving and used his savings to purchase a new Toyota Tacoma 4-wheel drive truck, which he shipped to Ukraine. Believing it would be essential for navigating the rugged roads, the truck has since been vital in delivering food to villages, even in harsh winter conditions.

In October of that year, Jim and Laurie moved to Ukraine full-time, dedicating their lives to serving the people there. Jim is not only a servant in any area needed but also a spiritual mentor to all, often considered a grandfather and father-figure within the community.
