Once, Iryna had everything one could dream of: a splendid, spacious house in the Luhansk region, a caring son, a beautiful daughter-in-law, and two amazing grandchildren. However, on the fateful day of February 24, 2022, her life shattered.
The ravages of war mercilessly took the life of her beloved son, leaving his wife mentally scarred. Iryna was left with the daunting responsibility of caring for her grandchildren and navigating a new world filled with soldiers, explosions, and terror.
Initially, Iryna held onto the hope that this nightmare would soon come to an end. But as Russian soldiers occupied her town and established a military observation post in her cherished home, her optimism dwindled.
Iryna and her grandchildren were forced to wander from house to house, seeking refuge with sympathetic neighbors. Soon, their town was cut off from electricity and gas, compelling them to cook food on open fires in the streets.
Witnessing her grandchildren's suffering and discomfort, Iryna made a difficult decision to flee the occupied town in search of shelter in the western regions of Ukraine. Fortunately, she managed to establish contact with volunteers in Uzhhorod. She gathered the children and embarked on a challenging journey to find refuge.
The road to Uzhhorod was an arduous five-day odyssey, marked by countless military roadblocks, overcrowded evacuation trains, and the desperate flight of refugees escaping the horrors of war.
In Uzhgorod, Iryna and her family found a glimmer of hope. They were introduced to Rima, who extended a helping hand and assisted them in settling in the town of Veliky Berezny. There, they were provided with a humble room, and the children were enrolled in the local school. Life began to gradually improve.
Today, the only place where Iryna can call home is Veliky Berezny. She remains in the dark about the fate of her house back in the Luhansk region. Returning to the territory where military operations are ongoing is simply not an option, especially with her children in tow.
